Alcatraz Ghost

Recently, a British couple made news by apparently taking a picture of a ghost woman in Alcatraz while on a tour. The woman who snapped the pic with her iPhone, Sheila Sillery-Walsh, said she was so excited by the picture that she forgot all about the tour and kept looking at the picture.

Her partner claimed to be a skeptic of ghosts until the picture was taken, and now he’s a believer. I’ve been around skeptics, they don’t change their mind that quickly. Especially when anybody could have popped their head up there. If there’s any possibility of a reason for the woman in the window, no matter how far fetched, a skeptic will believe it over that being a ghost.

Naturally one would begin to wonder if the story holds any merit, considering it was reported in the Daily Mail first and then the Huffington Post. However, Alcatraz is reportedly one of the most haunted places in America, even though the FAQ’s of the Alcatraz Cruises website says otherwise.

“Spiritualists and people who want to believe in ghosts often claim to pick up haunted auras and ghostly feelings when visiting Alcatraz. However, there are no authenticated cases of ghost sightings by any of Alcatraz’s residents over the years, whether they were soldiers, prisoners, correctional officers, family members or park rangers.”

No authenticated cases? In that case, no ghosts exist anywhere. That’s why there are still skeptics. Whatever.

Believe what you will, but the picture IS creepy and it could yet be another addition to the eerie history of one of America’s most haunted places. Or it could be a hoax. What say you?

My Work

I don’t think my current place of employment is haunted, but I really don’t know. I mean, on one hand I hear things from time to time that make me wonder, while on the other hand I haven’t felt anything there. So I just don’t know.

I mean, every now and then I’ll hear someone talk to me, only to discover nobody is there. And then I wonder if I had heard anybody speak at all. Things like that. For those of you who don’t know, I work at a pizza place.

Well, last night might have changed my mind. I got to work at 11 PM and clocked in. As I was doing that, out of the corner of my eye I saw someone walk from one wall to another. Where I saw it was where we stack our extra pizza boxes along the outside of our walk-in cooler. That’s where whoever it was started. Then they walked to the opposite wall, which is where our sinks are for doing dishes. Between me and the sinks is a wall, so whoever it was disappeared behind that wall, but there was nowhere for them to go except to the sinks.

On the computer where I clocked in I noticed there were only three other people there, and one had just left on a delivery. The other two I could see. Curiously I walked towards the sinks and I saw nobody was there. I then asked the manager on duty if anybody else was there and he said there wasn’t.

Later when the head boss came in, I was in the walk-in cooler with him telling him about it and he said it was creepy. I left and went to mop the floor, exactly where I had seen whatever I had seen. And while I was mopping I heard what sounded like someone knocking on a wall, or on the back door, or pounding on it… I’m not sure what the noise was, but I’ve heard it before and there’s nothing in the store that I know of that could make the noise. I don’t know if some kids were just being idiots and banging on the back door, so I’m not holding too much stock in the noise. But I know what I saw, and I swear I saw someone walk from the wall to the sinks.

Even later last night after I left work, I was driving up the road and had to quickly swerve out of the way, because a raccoon was SITTING in the middle of the lane I was driving in, facing me. As I swerved, he calmly stood and walked away, as if his job was done.

Last night was just a strange night.

Haunted Places: Poveglia Island

This one was new to me, and I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it before now. It looks like such an awesome place! I know there are a few places around the world that are supposed to be so haunted that some people have a hard time visiting them, and I probably would have a hard time here too. But I’d love to, it looks so cool!

So what is Poveglia Island? It’s one of many islands near Venice, Italy. It has a terrible history, full of plagues, insanity, and death. I found a lot of interesting stuff on it at Slightly Warped, including how the Italian government shut down tourism there because of how haunted the place is. Apparently waves crashing along the island also wash up charred bones all the time. Those bones could be from people who were around in the Roman era! Over 100,000 people are guessed to be “buried” there.

An insane asylum was built there, and it still stands there, and apparently the doctor who ran the place fell to his death from the bell tower, and he’s now buried inside the walls.

Regardless if that’s true or not, the island is labeled one of the most haunted places in the world, and the ground is supposedly sticky and ashy, from all of the bodies that had been burned there over the centuries.

An episode of Ghost Adventures was done there. While I never really got into that show (sometimes the stuff they find seems questionable, in my opinion) I might have to give this one a watch. You can too here!

While looking up more info on the place, I discovered that not only is tourism still allowed there, Italy is auctioning off the island to the highest bidder, and that is supposed to happen this month!

Oh man, I’d love to live there! Ok, maybe not. But I would like to visit it. It’s just a little too far away for me.
